I need to stop admitting these things publicly. First, I admit over at Romancing The Blog that I couldn't get past page 150 of Flowers From The Storm by Laura Kinsale. Now I'm admitting on my own blog that I'm giving up on The Seduction by Julia Ross after 100 pages.
Much more of this and I'll find romance readers on my front doorstep brandishing torches and pitchforks.
Yes, I know The Romance Reader loved it. Yes, I know AAR loved it.
Sorry - I'm not lovin' it. In fact, I'm kind of bored by it.
Hero loses entire life in card game. Villain says no problem - just boink this country widow and I'll give you your life back. Hero meets heroine. They banter. They play chess. They banter some more. Frankly, they begin to talk in circles.
I'm just not interested. Maybe I'm more burnt out on Regency England than I thought....

Sounds like you deifnitley need a non-Regency historical to read.
Never read Julia Ross, so no idea if the book gets any better.
I really liked this one, but I can relate to not liking books that everyone swoons over. When that happens I kind of wonder what am I missing?
I too could not finish this book, but have enjoyed some of Julia Ross's other books.
Don't feel bad. I read it and didn't love it. I found the idea that a supposedly intelligent hero would ever put his entire life up as a bet on a card game very unbelievable in the first place. Even after I accepted that premise, I had a hard time understanding how this impossible-to-get heroine would fall for this guy just after a bunch of talking. So for all the buzz that lead me to think I should love this book, not so much.
I'm one of the ones who did love it, but then everyone else in the entire Romance world swoons over Derek Craven and I'm just "meh" about him, so I know I can't point fingers. Ross has a distinctive writing style, and it either works for you or it doesn't. If you can find them, you might try her early trad Regencies written as Julia Ross Ewing; the writing style is much more straightforward. As for Alden having a TSTL moment at the beginning, it becomes clear later in the book that he'd been drugged.
I couldn't finish it either. Skimmed the last half of the book.
I always struggle to get into Julia Ross' books, I force myself to finish and usually end up liking them.
Weren't you burnt out on Regency-set historicals months ago? Did you take a break and reenter the genre again?
I've been reading Ngaio Marsh again and am noticing for the first time how nasty she is about little old ladies and gay men.

Yeah, I've been burnt out on them, but I keep trying to go back since I still have several in my TBR. I'm thinking I just need to ignore England for several months and try again around, say, July.
