Anyway, I know exactly what you mean when you talk about seeing "glimmers" when you talk about an author's earlier work. I read a Jessica Hart (love her!) Harlequin Romance from 1993 as part of last year's Challenge and while the writing was there, and the heroine was great - the hero was straight-up early 90s Alphahole. I enjoyed it as a trip through the author's evolution as a writer, but other than that it wasn't something I could ever see myself recommending to anyone.

AL: I was taking stock of my print TBR over the weekend and while I culled it quite a bit last year I still have more books than any one person should probably own. I need to make more progress on it in 2017.Wendyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12485867264936716806noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-350052669699480502.post-69157010852470821422017-01-18T21:47:57.781-08:002017-01-18T21:47:57.781-08:00If my TBR mountain range were not about to get its...If my TBR mountain range were not about to get its own postal code, I would grab this--you make it sound really good.

Still, on the wish list it does. Harlequin Romance ...Wendy, this book sounds great. Harlequin Romance is my favorite line and I'm so glad you promote it. Also, thanks for letting me post on your blog, I never hang out on Goodreads anymore, but I need to leave a review to keep myself honest.

My January challenge was not as successful as yours. My pick was Mary Balogh's "The Double Wager." I bought it as an impulse buy when I was on a trad regency kick in the late summer/early fall last year. The heroine Henrietta (a tomboy who prefers Henry) makes a bet to get a proposal from the Duke of Eversleigh, a notoriously toplofty lord. She doesn't know the Duke has also made a bet to be married in a month.

I bought this because I was hoping for something frothy like "Lady with the Black Umbrella" or "The Famous Heroine." This was not that. It wasn't a farce and it wasn't a classic Balogh angst fest either. It was -- much of a muchness. There were Big Secrets and Big Misunderstandings galore. There was an evil relative AND an evil ex-mistress. The hero said things like "Oh you little fool" about the heroine. It mostly reminded me that romances used to be very, very different. It's over 30 years old and you still see glimmers of Mary Balogh's great writing to come so I give it a C. Plus it helped me develop my new acronym, STTE (Skim To The End ;-))

Onward!Jillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15364220221782320521noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-350052669699480502.post-1179977470611228992017-01-18T17:41:58.936-08:002017-01-18T17:41:58.936-08:00I need to do a bunch of comfort reading from my ca...I need to do a bunch of comfort reading from my category piles before I buy more but this one does sound good.
