Amazon discontinued the ability to create images using their SiteStripe feature and in their infinite wisdom broke all previously created images on 12/31/23. Many blogs used this feature, including this one. Expect my archives to be a hot mess of broken book cover images until I can slowly comb through 20 years of archives to make corrections.

Pick-A-Book: Kristan Higgins

As mentioned in the previous post, RWA has asked me to be a presenter again at the annual Librarians Day event.  In previous years, I've been paired up with Tessa Dare (who I've read) and an editor with Harlequin.  This year I'm presenting with a fellow librarian and contemporary author Kristan Higgins.

Kristan Higgins, whose books I have never read.

Remember, when it comes to contemporaries, Wendy is Category Romance Girl - not so much Single Title Girl.

I figure the very least I can do is read something by my fellow panel member - and that's where you all come in.

Do you have a favorite Higgins book?  And if so, what it is?  Fire away your suggestions in the comments section, and depending on my reading mojo, we'll see how many I get through before the end of July.

Run, don't walk, to get Catch of the Day. It won a Rita.

Kristan's books absolutely rock. Go get it!

I don't think you can go wrong with any of her books. My favorite is The Next Best Thing, because I freaking love sweet beta heroes.

That being said--she wrote her earlier books in 1st person, but now she's writing in 3rd person. So maybe you'd want to try a book in her new style? Those are Until There Was You or Somebody to Love.

My favourites are Catch of the Day and All I've Ever Wanted, mostly because I love the heros in those two (strong silent types). I wasn't as much of a fan of her last two books but I still enjoyed them. Am off to pick up her newest book today!

I'm only saying this so that you won't feel totally alone if you don't enjoy whichever book you pick---I always feel like I should enjoy Higgins' books but I never do, so I've stopped reading her. I've liked several of her heroes, but her heroines all make me want to smack the crap out of them and that's a serious problem for a first person book.

Catch of the Day! It's still remains my favorite of her books and it's one of the few RITA winners I've agreed with. I love mysterious Malone.

I've read them all and I think my favorite is All I Ever Wanted. I think it's the funniest. Catch of the Day is also very good. All her books are enjoyable reads. She has a thing for character falling for ex-in-laws, though, like the heroine falling for her sister's ex-husband, or for her dead husband's brother, but even those books are good if you don't mind the ick factor.

Catch of the Day gets my votes, especially if you like brooding heroes.

LOL, so many choices Wendy!! Well I've reviewed them all I think, so if you want to know more about them...

It also depends what you prefer, 1st or 3rd POV.

I'm in the minority it seems, but I'd say try Fools Rush In or Just One of the Guys ;)

My favorite book by Ms. Higgins is "All I Ever Wanted" followed by ""Just One of the Guys". These books have 1st POV, which I don't generally like but Ms.Higgins write sweet and funny romances that more than make up for this. Surprisingly I haven't liked her past 3 books as much even though she has shifted to writing in 3rd POV.

Her new one "Somebody to Love" just got a starred review in Library Journal. A little librarian love!

Will need to start a spreadsheet to track the voting :)

I completely forgot that Higgins wrote some books in first person! For me personally, I adore it - but then I also read mystery/suspense so that might explain that.

I LOVE "Just one of the Guys" and "Too Good to be True" -- the latter is laugh-out-loud hilarious.

I'm in the minority but Catch of the Day made me seriously crazy. No POV from the hero at all since it's in 1st person PRESENT tense. Just One of the Guys was just kinda boring. She spends most of the book with someone else. And don't get me started on the emotionally stunted heroine from The Next Best Thing. I kept wishing Ethan and Parker would get back together. ;-)

My favorites of hers are All I Ever Wanted and Too Good to be True. 1st person, but not present tense. Why do I keep reading her? Well, I haven't read the last two, but she really does write well! I just don't always like her characters and I rarely like 1st person present tense.

Too Good To Be True. the spoons scene alone has me in stitches every time. She is so freaking hilarious.

Eh, Kristen Higgins has never been more than so-so for me. The more screwball comedy ones felt more screw up and not in a good way and the first persons failed utterly to grip me. Seriously, a few years back (was it really 2008? *gulp*) it seemed like every woman and her blog adored Catch of The Day and my reaction was a resounding 'meh.' I put it down three times before I finished it on a train. Perfectly competent writing but failed utterly to grab me.

That said, I picked up Somebody to Love as part of my revision-break-reading, on the theory that it would be undemanding and not too annoying and easily putdownable... and swallowed it whole in one morning. Ooops? But anyway, it hit the spot - I've seen the heroine Parker dinged for unlikableness in a few reviews, but I completely got her, and I am SO not a trust fund baby.

this is Barbs from SL and I've read many of KH's books and I don't have a favorite--I've enjoyed them all LOL

You should just put a poll on the sidebar :) It'd be faster LOL.

My favorite is My One and Only followed very closely by The Next Best Thing.
