Amazon discontinued the ability to create images using their SiteStripe feature and in their infinite wisdom broke all previously created images on 12/31/23. Many blogs used this feature, including this one. Expect my archives to be a hot mess of broken book cover images until I can slowly comb through 20 years of archives to make corrections.

Those Crazy Kids

One of the sucky things about living 3000 miles away from most of my family is that I don't get to spend any real quality time with my niece (The Fairy Princess) and my nephew (The Flash). The little wieners sure do grow up fast, and it's more than a little depressing that I only see them live and in person once a year. Seems like only yesterday that I was getting ready for RWA in Denver (for the record, that was 2002) and the Big Sis and Comic Book Guy brother-in-law were bringing her home from China. Now she's 7, and on her last birthday I was told to "Get her a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. She loves to pick out her own books."

The Big Sis occasional sends me cutesy stuff the kids do in school, and the latest arrival appeared last week. The Fairy Princess did this in school. They're currently learning about the concept of "big" numbers, and right now they're talking about "100." The teacher asked them what they would do with a $100, and here's what the smart girl wrote/drew:

Here's exactly what it says:
If I won $100.00 I would spend it on books I like at Barns and Noble and then I would come home and read all of my new books.
Sigh, it's enough to bring a tear to your eye isn't it? Just like her Auntie Wendy. She likes to spend money on books and favors run-on sentences. Bless that child's heart. I couldn't be more proud.

Run-on sentences are not a faux pas, they are an art form.

It's obvious. The child is a genius.

Did you happen to notice at this particular B&N they shelve the books by color? All the blue ones are together, all the purple ones are together, etc.
Yes, I am very proud of her. But I admit a little embarrassed that we feed the corporate machine that is B&N. But hey, it's better than spending $100 at McDonalds right?

How adorable, and and how promising that kids still love to read as opposed to saying "I would buy $100 worth of DVDs."

Lasa: As are sentence fragments! It's the only way to write blog posts says I.

Big Sis: That's actually an excellent idea. Every librarian has had at least one person ask them "I read this book once. It had a blue cover. Do you know which one it is?" Sadly they don't teach us to memorize book titles by color cover in library science school. And it's OK to feed the corporate machine. I know for a fact that best independent bookstore in your town is a used bookstore, and like most UBSs their children's section leaves a lot to be desired.

Everyone Else: The Fairy Princess was one of those rare children that would sit still for a stretch of time - so Big Sis was able to read books to her from the time she was a year old.

It reminds me a lot of when my sisters and I were growing up. If we wanted to read, we went to the library. We were massive library hos. So when we had the opportunity to buy our own books? Yeah, that was pretty special. It's how I explain my extreme anal retentiveness when it comes to book condition (OMG, use a bookmark! Argh! Don't crack the spine!)
