Amazon discontinued the ability to create images using their SiteStripe feature and in their infinite wisdom broke all previously created images on 12/31/23. Many blogs used this feature, including this one. Expect my archives to be a hot mess of broken book cover images until I can slowly comb through 20 years of archives to make corrections.

The Librarian's Dirty Little Secret

I know this is going to sound really bizarre, but it doesn't happen all too often when I can talk to people, in person, about books. I know, I'm a librarian. One would think I talk books all the dang time, but I really don't. Why? Because 95% of my reading is romance and it took spending time online to find people who admitted that they love the genre as much as I do. Up until I moved to California four years ago? There wasn't a single person, in my Real Life, who I could see in person, who read the genre. Not a single one. Sad, isn't it? And this is why the Internet rocks my socks.

Our Canadian friends to the north (Tim Horton's!), Nath and Ames have made their way to the States not only to attend Holly's wedding, but to also see some of Nath's family here in Southern California. On their way through, they stopped off to see me, Rosie and Lori. We hit Borders and then hit The Cheesecake Factory where I made the executive decision to the tell the diet to eff off for the day and treated myself to cheesecake! (White Chocolate Caramel Macadamia Nut - and with a name like that I don't think I have to tell you that yes, it was wonderful)

We talked, we laughed, we enabled each other at the bookstore. Plus Rosie brought a whole bag of read books for us to rummage through! We had a great time (like there was ever any doubt) and it only served to get me ramped up for RWA this summer. Cuz, man, there's a whole mess of people there I can talk to about books.

Picture from L to R: Ames, Rosie, Nath, me (yes, the freaky tall one) and Lori.

I'm amazed you have no-one to talk books with. I mean, me, sure, I live in a eco-hippie-crunch nabe with loads of folks reading literary fiction (and occasionally I do, too), but you? Who is a librarian? Wow.

Looks like you had fun, and I'da gone for the cheesecake, too.

Megan: It's my dumb luck I work with some snobby librarians. OMG! You read romance? Ick, ick, ick love cooties! It's not that far off from the eco-hippie-crunch crowd - trust me.

That said, one of my coworkers does read romance but tends to stick with the Big Bestsellers (Nora, Linda Howard, Stephanie Laurens etc.) and I just don't read a ton of Big Names. I always seem to be floating around the midlist....

What a great picture! I love Cheesecake Factory! YUM.

I agree with Wendy. You can find people who will talk literary fiction out the wazoo. A good genre fiction discussion? Nope. Maybe mysteries. Maybe science fiction. Not romance. Even amongst the librarians.

No cheesecake for me and I dumped the 2 lbs from the sister visit. Whew! I can go weigh in tomorrow with a clear conscience.

Cheeeeesecake. I shudder to think of the points. *shudder* And it is the one food that I really cannot resist. So creamy and good. man, good thing I am full or I'd have a serious craving about now. lol.

*warning* shameless blog pimp at end of post!!! Feel free to delete or ignore!

Ok, now that that's out of the way --
I am a librarian. I read lots of genre fiction. I read romance. I read romance blogs. I even use romance blogs as a collection development tool! Better yet, my boss, a New York Times Award winning librarian famous (locally) for her book discussions (yes, literary fiction) thinks that this is just great. But then, she confesses to being a thriller junkie.
I am really pretty lucky. The librarians I work with read all kinds of stuff, are honest about it, and feel that talking to patrons about books is really important, even if those books are genre fiction. Truth be told, I think more librarians read genre fiction than will admit to it.
I also have a library director who is a believer in giving the people what they want, and so our library romance blog was born in January.
Here it is: http://vplpassionpostings.blogspot.com/
Feel free to stop by on line, or in person if you are ever near Voorheesville, NY. I love blog comments, guest reviews, and an excuse to stand around in the reading room talking about books!

Stop with the tall freaky thing! You are so not freaky. Tall, yes LOL freaky, no.

I had such a nice time - it was great to meet Nath and Ames and hear about Holly's wedding!

Rosie, so glad you lost those 2 lbs. Hey - guess what? I found 'em!!

It sounds like you had a really fun time! All the people I know either don't read - and are proud of it - or they read bestsellers. Sometimes it drives me crazy not to have anyone to talk books with! I've tried to form a romance reader's book group before but didn't have any takers. At least I can read blogs like yours and not feel totally disconnected!

Kerry: I have better luck with mysteries, but not much since I'm not quite as "well read" in that genre anymore since discovering romance. Romance pretty much took over my life.

Rosie lost her 2 lbs. Now if only I could lose that, only put a 0 behind the 2.

Sula: I think the Weight Watcher point value on my cheesecake was around 35 :)

Welcome Macaire! More blogging librarians!

David: You just forgot how tall I am :)

It was great to meet you Nath!

Lori: OK, probably not freaky. For the record I'm 5'9". It's what happens when your father could be the stage double for the Jolly Green Giant.

Laura: I know! It's why I love blogs too!

I'm so envious of you all getting together. I'm comforted by the fact though that soon we shall have another meeting.

That was exactly the same cheese cake I had last time I went to Cheesecake Factory. It was awesome.

And strangely enough, I don't remember you being that tall either. Maybe it was because the time I saw you in an elevator at RWA Dallas you were holding a huge box.

Cheesecake Factory in San Fran anybody? *G*

Woot! Tim Horton's baby ;) From another Canuck :)

Sherry: And the other time we met was after the RITAs and you were sitting down. I seem to recall I was wearing heels though - so I was really freaky tall that night!

Kristie: I can't wait to see you again!

Katie: Yup, there's a Cheesecake Factory in Union Square :)

Alie: Speaking of "ear worms" - now I have the Tim Horton's jingle stuck in my head. Dagnabit!

Wendy! Guess where we will be Tuesday night! *hint hint*

mmm, 35 points. hehe. Well, cheesecake is definitely one item that would be worth it. *drool*

Oh and we tall girls rock! woot! I'm somewhere between 5'9-10 myself. Besides, it means we get to weigh more just because of the height thingy. double woot!

I started blogging because I couldn't talk about romance with anyone. So I'm glad I got to meet you all! LOL It was so much fun - but I envy all you ladies meeting up at RWA. That would be perfect, because I felt our visit was too short. :(

Kudos to Rosie!
