Amazon discontinued the ability to create images using their SiteStripe feature and in their infinite wisdom broke all previously created images on 12/31/23. Many blogs used this feature, including this one. Expect my archives to be a hot mess of broken book cover images until I can slowly comb through 20 years of archives to make corrections.

My Mom Is A Bitch

I started my first "real" job is January 1999. Not only did this mean Y2K fun at the library, but it also meant that Wendy had thrown off the oppressive yoke of - yeah you guessed it - soap operas. Then The Boyfriend moved in with me, and with only one TV & VCR (and his refusal to watch the soaps with me), I gave them up entirely. It was just "too hard." Besides, by that point I had discovered romance novels - and I figured one guilty pleasure was enough for this girl.

But while The Parents were here, Mom had to watch The Young And The Restless. "It's really good right now Wendy! Victor is going crazy!" OK, Mom. Sure we'll watch. And now, after 7 years of being out from under the black cloud, I'm back. I'm hooked on Y&R. Smilin' Jack Abbott is starting to look old (I don't care, I still love him) - but Brad, Victor and Nikki (lay off the fake eyelashes honey!) still look the same thanks to the wonders of modern plastic surgery. Oh, and everybody's kids are now (at least) 16 since they contracted SORAS (Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome).

Damn. Guess it's a good thing I have TiVo.

In reading news - I was able to run out on Tuesday to buy The Mephisto Club by Tess Gerritsen on it's laydown date. Costco (The Happiest Place On Earth) had them out (bless them) and at a very good price ($14 and change if I remember right). Of course, I didn't actually start reading it until this morning (2 chapters in), but I was able to pet it, and stare at it longingly all week. Which is probably a sign that I need a 12-step program - but I don't care.

LMAO!!!! After weaning myself off those things, now that I'm in between jobs again, I've found myself watching them again and *sad sigh* Y&R is one of them. Every day I sit there and watch it, I'm asking myself why at the same time. Michael Baldwin is the only one I can tolerate and Hello! Jack and Sharon????? It's like the writers think we are all idiots or something. Jack was married to Nikki for years - now he's carrying on with her ex-daughter in law? Blech!!! I gotta get myself off them again.

I'm tolerating Jack and Sharon for the moment since it's sort of playing like Jack has alterior motives (frankly I liked it when he was married to Nikki, but that's just me). But Phyllis and Nick? Ew. Frankly, I'm thinking the perfect couple on that show would be Michael (I agree, his character is great - although his friendship with Victor has me a bit flummoxed) and Phyllis. And I've only watched 5 days worth but already I hate Gloria....

And what the heck is up with Dru? She got all pyscho on me....

Wendy, I feel your pain. My Mom loved General Hospital and we used to watch it together when I got home from HS. That was 35 years ago.

Off and on over the years I've gone through periods of watching depending on whether or not I was working. I'm in an "off" period right now.

SoapNet has been my nemesis in recent years. Some random Sunday afternoon I'll be clicking through the TV looking for something to watch and WHAM-O. SoapNet will pop up and I'll get sucked into watching a week of GH or One Life to Live in an afternoon and it will be all over.

LOL

I used to watch the Y&R when I was younger. Then I moved to Germany-and was out of the loop for 6 years. When I did happen to watch an episode-I was absolutely shocked that everyone still looked the same! hehe But I couldn't get back into it.

I had to give up on soap operas too, but I do miss General Hospital every now and then. It was so good, but school was too busy and I didn't have time to watch 5 hours a weekend of tapes.
